First off: Do NOT cut the little red pony tail wires at either end of the video cord. My installation took less than ten minutes, total. Yours can, too, if you know what you're doing. I installed this unit on my work truck. So, mount the camera on your license plate if you're mainly concerned with trailer hook-ups. It'll see your ball and your trailer as you back up to it. It'll see when your ball is directly under your coupler, easy as pie. It'll also see the surrounding area, to an extent. If you are more concerned with mainly seeing the surrounding area and other vehicles in parking lots, you may want to mount the camera higher on your gate. It's a simple matter of drilling through the metal and using sheet metal screws. If you can get the right angle, and this camera does tilt up and down a bit, you may be able to view your ball and the surrounding area. I only cared about hitching up my trailer. It needs to be screwed into exposed metal, not plastic or painted metal. Now, connect the red lead to the red pony tail on the video (black) wire. Run that black wire inside your bed and then into your back door, if you have a quad cab. Mount the monitor screen on CLEAN plastic on your dash. Use an alcohol prep pad before you try to stick on the unit. It holds great only if the plastic is cleaned, beforehand. Connect the yellow plug from the black video wire to the yellow input on the monitor. Connect the red lead from the monitor to the red lead on a cigarette lighter 12V plug. The black lead from the monitor can be clipped, as the whole system is grounded from in back with the wire you attached to your truck body. At least mine was. Now start your truck and plug in the plug. Yeah, it'll work, and the picture on the monitor is sharper than what's in new, factory installed systems, these days. The white input, from the monitor, can be clipped. I could not get another camera to display through it, and I wasn't interested in watching DVD's at sixty miles an hour. You can neaten up the many wires and plugs with those split cable-gathering tubes from RS or Fry's. You can avoid snagging wires with 3M adhesive wire clips. I do not like having the camera come on only when I'm in reverse. I want to see what's behind me when I want to see it. That's why I didn't bother with tapping into reverse power in my rear light stack. Much quicker on the install, and easier to just insert the plug whenever I want to see what's directly in back of my truck. Using clear, good-grade caulk, and a toothpick, carefully seal all seams around the camera, its lens and its mounting bracket. This should keep out all moisture for a good, long time, if done correctly. Know, beforehand, that the wires in this unit are thinner than human hairs, and treat everything carefully. UPDATE: One week later: While the above will help you quickly install your camera, what follows will do so even faster: Forget using the cables that came with your unit, the ones with the red pigtails.
