May 15th, 2006 May 15, 2006 Linthicum, MD -- Ciena today introduced the CN 4200 MC, a compact version of its CN 4200 FlexSelect Advanced Services Platform that extends its FlexSelect Architecture to the network edge. Designed for deployment at enterprises and carrier locations with space restrictions, the CN 4200 MC reduces the cost to deliver a variety of service backhaul and metro transport applications, say company representatives, including business services, managed wavelength services, video distribution, and wireless infrastructure. Ciena's CN 4200 family of platforms, with FlexiPort optical interfaces, offers individual, remotely-programmable ports that support any optical service type and can function as either client or network interface. The CN 4200 MC, specifically, extends this value in an edge-optimized platform that network operators and large enterprises can deploy as far out as the wiring closet with full service-management capabilities, contends the company. The CN 4200 MC features FlexSelect management enabled by ON-Center, the vendor's network management system that combines point-and-click ease of use and automation with service management tools, including service level agreements (SLAs), user-defined thresholds, and sophisticated reporting. He joined the company in 2003 as COO from Cisco, where he was a vice president. Infinera is the incumbent optical transport systems supplier on most of those routes. All rights reserved. I'm a little confused there is a speed command and a negotiate command. In general doesn't one negate the other. That being said, auto always worked for us, but we have always matched maximum port speed on each side. Then again, fiber sfp modules are not capable of changing speeds, except for those troublesome ones that are supposed to but don't work right. I hate companies that do this. But they are inherently full-duplex, so negotiating that is out of the question. Hey good find looks like that is the same all the way up. I wonder why all my other devices negotiated with the Cienna 100 mbps ports at 1 gig as well. Sad that these vendors can't get auto-negotiation right on older specs after 17 years. Like some allow you to hard set the speed of a 1000BaseT interface. Even though the standard says copper GigE needs to have autoneg on. You're situation might be similar at 100Mb. Very easy to work out though. Switch autoneg on, if the interface comes up at full duplex then the other side has it on - so leave it at that. If it comes up at half duplex then the other side has autoneg disabled, but you'll still know the speed it's come up at. We tried setting speed at 100 and the link goes full down. I've got some EXFO demo equipment that lets me see a little better diagnostic information I'm hoping will tell me exactly what they are set to. Routers, switches, wireless, and firewalls. OneConnect introduces a new level of programmability and advanced virtualisation features for the Wide Area Network (WAN) as well as enables rich policy-based control more extensively across the network. As a result, many network operators deploying Ciena OneConnect can benefit from more than 40 percent bandwidth savings for service restoration, up to 30 percent latency reduction in highly meshed networks, and new differentiated service offerings including secure Optical Virtual Private Networks (O-VPN).

Problems that in my opinion should have gone away a decade or more ago. My background in Cisco and the lack of documentation is failing me here. Edit: Our side is currently a 4500x running 3.08.05.E.152-4-E5 Their side appears to be a 311v - On one of them (the side that appears to be working we're plugged into one of their fast ethernet ports) on the one that isn't they have us plugged into a copper SFP. Edit2: The side that was down is actually a Ciena CN4200 - I took an EXFO tester to it and the cienna side was wack. It negotiated at 1 gbps. Yet the carrier said the port was 100 mbps capable only. So even with negotiation no idea why every other system negotiated it at a gig for speed. Edit3: Thanks for the assistance guys this appears to be a problem with Cienna's 100 M sfp ports of which 2 out of the 4 ports across our two p2p with this carrier are failing at us. We had previously performed the upgrade to 3.08 but some of the carrier links weren't hard set and were instead set to auto. So inconsistencies in our troubleshooting and in my opinion cienna doesn't appear to implement auto-negotiation correctly.THAT I can tell you. I have 9 sites, and when the Ciena switches went in, I had this problem at 6 of my sites. I had to call and create a ticket for each one individually. Huge hassle and I had to extend my outage window. If it's fiber, then you yeah, just do whatever. I often looked up the IEEE when I worked for a service provider but all their stuff is behind a paywall. You use a GLC-T; did you have to set media type to RJ-45 when using a copper SFP.I haven't dealt with ATT but our other carriers all auto-negotiate and then use traffic policiers to limit it. I do the same on my side and everyone is happy.. have you tried a non SFP RJ-45 port on the 4500 connected to the Ciena This is the 4500x fixed module, I don't have a non-sfp port. Unfortunately, I don't have access to the Ciena so I'm at the mercy of what the carrier tells me is configured.
